Most problems do not come from the idea of the application itself. The audit a citizenship file needs before it is filed
A nationality application is an evidential exercise about your past, and the past is not editable. That is why the review has to happen before anything is submitted:
- Legal residence, continuous and immediately prior. Not time spent in Spain, but time spent lawfully resident. Periods on a student stay, gaps between permits or years with an expired card are the issues that decide the file, and they are found by reading your permit history against your padrón history.
- Civil-status documents: birth certificate and, where relevant, marriage certificate, issued recently, legalised by apostille or consular route and translated by a sworn translator. Documents issued years ago for another purpose are usually not reusable.
- Criminal record certificates from your country of origin and from Spain, each with its own route and its own validity.
- The exams, where they apply: the constitutional and sociocultural knowledge test, and the Spanish language certificate from which nationals of Spanish-speaking countries are exempt.
Which route your case belongs to
Nationality by residence is not one procedure with one clock. The required period depends on your circumstances, and there are also routes by option, by descent or by marriage that follow different logic entirely. Applying under the wrong route with a well-prepared file is a slower failure than applying under the right one with an incomplete file, because the second can be corrected and the first cannot.

What happens after a favourable resolution
The grant is not the end. There is a period in which you have to appear before the Civil Registry to swear or promise allegiance to the Constitution and the King, declare the renunciation where it applies, and have the acquisition registered. Only after that registration can you apply for a Spanish identity document and passport.
Missing that appearance window is the one avoidable way to lose a nationality that has already been granted, and it happens to people who assumed the resolution was the finish line.
