Social Security Number in Barcelona: Help for Foreigners in Spain

A Social Security number in Spain is one of the first practical steps many foreigners need before they can start a job, register correctly for work or move forward with related administrative procedures. It sounds simple, but when it is handled too late it can slow down employment, self-employment registration and other parts of a move to Spain.

When this service is most useful
This is most useful when the number is linked to a new job, self-employment plans or a recent arrival in Spain where several steps have to line up correctly. The main mistake people make is treating it as an isolated errand instead of part of the wider process.
Cases we handle, and what changes in each
- You start work as an employee. Your employer registers your alta, but the alta needs an existing number. If you do not have one, the start date is at risk, and the employer often does not realise why.
- You are becoming self-employed. The number comes first, then the alta in the self-employed regime, and the tax registration alongside it. The order is not negotiable and it is where most autónomo files lose a week.
- You are covered as a family member. There is a beneficiary route for spouses and children of an insured person that does not require you to work.
- You worked in Spain years ago. You almost certainly already have a number. Requesting a second one creates a duplicate record that then has to be merged, which is slower than finding the original.
- You need it for a residence file. Some routes ask for evidence of cover rather than the number itself, and the two are not the same document.
The health card is a separate step
Having a Social Security number does not give you a health card. In Catalonia the card is issued by the regional health service, and obtaining it needs the number, the empadronamiento at your address and an appointment with your assigned primary care centre.
People routinely believe the card arrives with the job. It does not, and the gap becomes obvious at the first medical need. If your cover is private rather than public, our health insurance page is the relevant one instead.

- Passport or national identity document, and your NIE or TIE.
- Your address, and the padrón certificate if the office requests it.
- The job offer or contract, if the request is tied to employment.
- Any previous Spanish employment history you remember, so we can check whether a number already exists before requesting a new one.

We check first whether you already have a number, prepare the application, book the appointment and handle the sequence with whatever else is running: the residence file, the self-employment registration or the start date of a contract. Where the number is only one step of a broader arrival, treating it separately is what creates the delay.
