Becoming autónomo is the fastest legal way to start invoicing in Spain. You are the business: no share capital, no notary, no company accounts. We file the two registrations it takes, in the right order and on the right dates, and tell you beforehand what it will cost you every month afterwards.

Two registrations, two authorities, one order

People talk about “becoming autónomo” as if it were one step. It is two, with two different bodies, and doing them in the wrong order or on the wrong day costs money.

1. Alta censal with the Agencia Tributaria

Modelo 036, or the simplified 037 if your situation allows it. This is the tax side. Here you declare:

  • The activity, by choosing an epígrafe of the IAE. This is the decision that matters most, because it determines which taxes you are on the hook for.
  • Whether you charge VAT. Some professional and training activities are exempt; most are not. Getting this wrong means filing returns you did not need, or failing to file ones you did.
  • How you pay income tax on account: quarterly payments, or withholding applied by your clients on your invoices, which is the usual arrangement for professional activities billing Spanish companies.
  • The start date. This is the day the tax obligations begin.

2. Alta in RETA with the Social Security

RETA is the self-employed scheme. This is where the monthly contribution is set, based on the net income bracket you declare for the year. It is also where the reduced starting rate for new registrations is requested, if you qualify for it.

The Social Security alta has to be consistent with the tax one. The date matters here for a blunt reason: the monthly contribution is not prorated the way people assume, so registering on the wrong day can mean paying a full month for a couple of days of activity.

The mistakes that cost money

The wrong epígrafe. Picking one that roughly resembles your work, rather than the one that fits it, is the single most common error. You can find yourself filing quarterly VAT returns for an activity that was exempt, or the reverse, and the correction is retroactive.

Registering before you actually need to. The obligation attaches to carrying out the activity. Registering weeks “to be ready” starts the contribution clock for nothing.

Assuming the reduced rate is automatic. It has conditions, it has to be requested, and it does not apply to everyone who is registering for the first time.

Forgetting what comes after. Being autónomo is not a one-off act, it is a calendar. Quarterly filings, an annual return, and invoices that have to carry specific information to be valid. We give you that calendar in writing when we file.

If you are not Spanish

You need a NIE first. There is no alta censal and no RETA without one. If you do not have it, start at our NIE in Barcelona page.

EU citizens with a NIE and an EU registration certificate can register directly.

Non-EU citizens need a residence authorisation that permits self-employment. This is the point that stops most people. A residence permit is not automatically a work permit, a non-lucrative visa does not authorise working on your own account, and a student stay has its own limits. If your status is the open question, start at residency applications, and if you work remotely for clients abroad, the digital nomad visa is often the route that fits.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take? Once we have your documents and your NIE, it is a matter of days. The limiting factor is usually your paperwork, not the administration.

Can I be autónomo and employed at the same time? Yes. It is called pluriactividad and it has its own contribution rules. Tell us in the form if that is your case, because it changes what you should declare.

What if I only invoice clients outside Spain? You still register here if you are resident and carrying out the activity here. What changes is the VAT treatment of those invoices, which is one of the things we check before choosing your obligations.

What if I want a company instead? Then you want the other route: see setting up an SL in Barcelona. If you are not sure which, that is exactly what our autónomo or SL page is for.

Can I switch to an SL later? Yes, and many people do once the numbers or the liability justify it. We handle the change.

Contribution rates, reduced starting rates and tax thresholds are set each year and change, so we confirm the ones in force for your case before filing.
