A return authorisation (autorización de regreso) is the document that lets you leave Spain and come back while your residence situation is not fully covered by a valid card: typically when your renewal is in progress, or when your TIE has been lost or stolen and you have applied for a duplicate. It is regulated by article 5 of Royal Decree 1155/2024, and it is only granted in specific cases, so the first thing to settle is whether yours is one of them.

We check whether you qualify, prepare the application and the supporting documents, and, if you need it, book the appointment and follow the file until it is issued. Document preparation costs 90 € + VAT, and the service with appointment costs 200 € + VAT. Official fees are paid separately.

Who it is for

You may be able to obtain one if:

  • Your residence or stay authorisation is being renewed or extended, and you can prove that you started the renewal or extension within the legal deadline.
  • You hold a valid TIE that has been stolen, lost, destroyed or damaged, and you can prove that you have applied for a duplicate.
  • Your initial residence or stay application has been resolved favourably, but you do not yet have the card, and you need to travel because of a situation of need with exceptional reasons that you can prove.

Outside these cases there is no return authorisation, which is why we check first whether you qualify.

Why it matters

The usual reason people contact us is a trip that cannot wait: a parent in hospital, a family funeral, a wedding, or a work commitment abroad, at the exact moment when the renewal is pending or the card has gone missing.

During its validity there is no limit on entries and exits with a single document, so you can travel more than once if you need to. Two points to keep in mind:

  • Under EU law it is only valid to enter through Spanish authorised border crossings. If you plan to come back through another EU country, the document does not cover that entry.

How long it is valid

  • If you request it before your residence or stay authorisation expires, it is valid for no more than 90 days from that expiry.
  • If you request it after the expiry, it is valid for no more than 90 days from the date it is granted.
  • In the case of an initial authorisation resolved favourably and a proven situation of need, it is valid for up to 90 days from the grant.

When the trip responds to a situation of need, the application is processed with priority when that need is documented.

The authorisation is granted by the Government Delegate or Sub-delegate, the Comisario General de Extranjería y Fronteras, or the heads of police stations and border posts.

What we do

The form, the evidence and the office depend on your case, so we tell you exactly which form and documents apply to your situation and prepare them with you.

  1. We check whether you qualify. We look at your authorisation, its expiry, when you filed the renewal or duplicate, and the reason for your trip.
  2. We prepare the application and the supporting documents: proof of the renewal or extension filed on time, proof that you applied for a duplicate of a lost, stolen, destroyed or damaged card, and evidence of the situation of need where it applies.
  3. With the appointment service, we book the appointment and follow the file until the authorisation is issued.

If your TIE is the issue, we can also handle the duplicate itself through our TIE card service. If your renewal has not yet been filed, that has to come first: see our residence permit renewal service.

What is included

  • A review of your situation to confirm whether the return authorisation is available to you.
  • The correct application form, completed for your case.
  • A checklist of the supporting documents you need, and a review of them before you file.
  • Guidance on documenting a situation of need.
  • With the appointment service: booking the appointment and following up until it is issued.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving Spain without it. If your renewal is pending or your card is missing, travelling without the authorisation is the risk this document exists to avoid.
  • Applying when the case does not qualify, such as a first card not yet granted.
  • Not proving the renewal was filed within the legal deadline. The application depends on that proof.
  • A lost TIE without a duplicate request. The duplicate must already be applied for.
  • Planning to re-enter through another EU country. The authorisation is only valid at Spanish authorised border crossings.
  • Not documenting the urgency when you need priority.

Prices

  • Document preparation: 90 € + VAT. We check whether you qualify and prepare the application and supporting documents.
  • With appointment: 200 € + VAT. Everything above, plus booking the appointment and following up.

Official fees are paid separately. All our prices are shown without VAT. You can see our other services on our packs and services page.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a return authorisation while I wait for my first TIE? Only if your initial application has been resolved favourably and you can prove a situation of need with exceptional reasons. If your authorisation has not been granted, there is no return authorisation for you.

How long is a return authorisation valid? No more than 90 days. If you request it before your authorisation expires, the 90 days count from that expiry. If you request it after, they count from the date it is granted.

Can I travel more than once with it? Yes. During its validity there is no limit on entries and exits with the same document.

Can I fly back into Spain through another EU country? No. It is only valid to enter through Spanish authorised border crossings, so plan a direct return into Spain.

My TIE was stolen and I need to travel next week. What do I do? Apply for the duplicate first, then request the return authorisation with proof of that application. Contact us and we will tell you which documents apply and how to show the urgency.

Requirements, fees and procedures can change, so we confirm the current ones for your case before you file.
