NIE Barcelona is one of the most common searches people make when they need to start paperwork in Spain quickly. In practice, most foreigners are not only looking for the number itself. They are trying to understand how to get the right NIE appointment in Barcelona, whether a cita previa is enough for their case, what documents need to be ready first and how the NIE connects with work, banking, tax or residency steps that come immediately after.

Why people lose time with the NIE
Most delays do not come from the idea of the NIE itself. They come from treating every file as if it were the same. Some people need help understanding whether they only need the number or whether the real issue is a wider immigration file. Others secure a cita too early, prepare the wrong proof or only later realise that another procedure depends on the NIE being handled properly first. That is why the real value is not generic information. It is getting the sequence right.

Which NIE you actually need
People say "the NIE" for three different documents, and asking for the wrong one is the most common reason a first attempt fails.
- The NIE as a number. A personal identification number for foreigners. It is issued on a white A4 sheet, it has no photograph and, on its own, it does not prove that you live in Spain or authorise you to work.
- The registration certificate for EU citizens. A green card-sized certificate that contains your NIE and does prove lawful residence. If you are an EU national living here, this is normally what you need.
- The TIE. The physical card for non-EU nationals who already hold a residence authorisation. It carries the NIE, your photograph and the type of permit. Our guide comparing the NIE, the EU registration certificate and the TIE explains what each one is for.
If someone asks you for "your NIE" in a bank, a notary or an employment file, what they usually want is the number. If an administration asks you to prove residence, the sheet is not enough.
The two routes, and why the reason for the request matters
A NIE can be requested inside Spain at an Immigration Office or police station, or from the Spanish consulate in your country of residence. The application uses the EX-15 form and the 790 fee form, code 012.
What catches people out is that the application asks for the economic, professional or social reason behind the request, and it has to be documented. Buying a property, signing a work contract, inheriting, incorporating a company or becoming a shareholder are all valid reasons, but each needs its own supporting document. An application with no reason attached is the classic rejection.
What to bring
- Passport or national identity document, original and a copy of every page that carries a stamp or data.
- The completed EX-15 form.
- The 790 fee form, paid at a bank before the appointment. Turning up with it unpaid means going back another day.
- The document that justifies the reason: a deposit contract for a purchase, a job offer, a notarial document, whatever applies to your case.
- If someone is acting for you, a power of attorney and their identification.
