Modelo 790 código 012 is the Policía Nacional fee form for documents for foreigners: NIE assignment, the TIE card, the EU registration certificate and other certificates. You fill it in on the police electronic office, print it, pay it at a bank before your appointment (in cash, by card or by account debit) and bring the stamped copy. If what you are filing is a residence authorisation at the Oficina de Extranjería, the fee is a different one: the 790-052.

The documented reason, the EX-15, the fee form, the appointment and, with the premium service, someone with you at the counter.
150 € + VAT standard, 190 € + VAT with accompaniment.

012 or 052: which fee is yours
Both are “modelo 790”, the generic form the Spanish State uses to collect fees. The code after it says which authority collects it and for what:
| 790, code 012 | 790, code 052 | |
|---|---|---|
| Collected by | Policía Nacional | Delegaciones and Subdelegaciones del Gobierno (Oficina de Extranjería) |
| What it pays for | Police documents: NIE assignment, TIE card (first issue, renewal, long-term residence, family members of Spanish citizens), certificates requested by the person, invitation letters, stay extensions | Processing of residence authorisations and other documentation for foreign citizens: initial authorisations, renewals, arraigo, modifications |
| When | Before the police appointment, and you bring it | Before filing the authorisation, and you attach it |
| Official page | sede.policia.gob.es | sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es |
A common sequence for a non-EU resident shows both: you pay the 052 when the residence authorisation is filed, and once it is granted you pay the 012 for the TIE card at the fingerprint appointment. They are not alternatives, and one does not replace the other.
How to fill in the 790-012, step by step
- Open the official form on the Policía Nacional electronic office, under “Tasa modelo 790 código 012”. It is filled in on screen and then downloaded and printed.
- Your details: NIE or passport number, full name, address in Spain if you have one.
- Select the procedure. This is the field that decides the amount. For a NIE, choose the option for “Asignación de Número de Identidad de Extranjero (NIE)”. For a first TIE, the option “TIE que documenta la primera concesión de la autorización de residencia temporal”. For a renewal, the renewal option. Picking the wrong line is the most common error, and a fee paid for the wrong procedure is not accepted at the counter.
- Choose the payment method the form offers: cash, card or account debit.
- Download and print it. The form comes with copies: one for you, one for the bank, one for the administration.
The form shows the amount for the option you selected. Amounts are updated every year; for most first TIE cards it is currently 16,08 €.
How to pay it
- At a bank counter, at any collaborating bank, in cash or by card. The bank stamps your copies.
- At a cash machine or in online banking: many banks let you pay State fees there by entering the form’s reference. It depends on the bank, so check yours.
- By account debit, if you chose that option on the form and have a Spanish account.
Whichever way you pay, bring proof to the appointment: the stamped copy or the payment receipt with the form. Arriving with an unpaid fee means the appointment is lost.
Which fee in the most common cases
| Your situation | Fee |
|---|---|
| You need a NIE to buy a property, sign a job contract or set up a company | 790-012, NIE assignment line |
| You arrived with a long-stay visa and need your first TIE | 790-012, first TIE line |
| You are renewing your residence authorisation | 790-052 when you file the renewal, then 790-012 for the new card |
| You are an EU citizen registering as resident | 790-012, the line for the certificate |
| You are applying for arraigo or another initial authorisation | 790-052 when you file, then 790-012 for the card once granted |
When the case involves both fees, the order is always the same: the 052 belongs to the application, the 012 to the document that comes after it.
Mistakes that cost an appointment
- Paying the 052 when the appointment is at the police, or the 012 when you are filing a residence application.
- Selecting the wrong procedure line, such as renewal instead of first issue.
- Paying with someone else’s details: the fee must carry the details of the person the document is for.
- Leaving the payment for the morning of the appointment and finding the bank closed.
Which appointment goes with each fee is explained in our guides to the NIE appointment in Barcelona and the TIE fingerprint appointment.
FAQ
Can I pay the 790-012 online? In many cases, yes, through your bank’s online banking or cash machines using the form’s reference, depending on the bank. The official form also offers account debit.
Is the 790-012 the same as the TIE fee? The TIE fee is one of the options inside the 790-012. The same form covers the NIE, the EU registration certificate and other police documents, each with its own line and amount.
Do I pay the fee if Barcelona Expat handles my NIE? Yes. The official fee is always paid to the administration and is separate from our fee. We prepare the form with the right line so it is not paid twice.
Fee amounts, procedure names on the form and payment options change, so check the official form before you pay.
