Arrived in Barcelona with a Spanish Visa: Your First 30 Days (2026)

If you have just landed in Barcelona with a Spanish long-stay visa, the clock is already running. Your visa is an entry document: it lets you in, but the card that proves your residence is the TIE, and you have one month from your entry into Spain to apply for it. In Barcelona that means booking a police fingerprint appointment, and in practice you also need your empadronamiento first.

Before that appointment, read what the Spanish residence card is and the documents it needs, so you arrive with the full set.

This is the order we follow with clients who arrive on student, non-lucrative, digital nomad, work or family visas, so nothing important slips past the first month.

Workers have one extra step, Social Security registration, which is normally done by the employer. Everything else is the same for every visa type.

Step 1: register your address (empadronamiento)

The padrón is the city’s register of residents. Barcelona police offices normally ask for your registration certificate at the TIE appointment, and you will need it later for healthcare, schools and most renewals. Book it in your first days through the City Council’s appointment system: appointments can take a week or more to appear.

You will need your passport, your visa and proof that you live at the address: a rental contract in your name, or a signed authorisation from the person you live with plus a copy of their ID. Our guide to empadronamiento in Barcelona covers the documents, the appointment and the most common reasons for being turned away.

Step 2: book the TIE fingerprint appointment

Do not wait for the padrón to book the police appointment. Book both in the same week. The fingerprint appointment is free and is booked only on the official system; any police office in the province of Barcelona is valid, so Sabadell, Terrassa or L’Hospitalet count as much as the city centre. Your NIE is already printed on your visa, so you book with that number.

The step-by-step booking, the exact name of the procedure and what to do when there are no slots are in our guide to the TIE fingerprint appointment in Barcelona.

One thing that changed in October 2026: for some residence authorisations granted inside Spain, the police now assign the fingerprint appointment automatically by SMS or email. That pilot does not apply to people arriving with a visa from a consulate: you still book your own appointment.

Step 3: prepare the paperwork for the appointment

  • EX-17 form, completed and signed.
  • 790-012 fee, paid beforehand. For most first cards it is currently 16,08 €; our guide to modelo 790 código 012 shows how to fill it in and pay it.
  • Passport with the visa, original and a copy.
  • A recent colour passport photo.
  • Your padrón certificate (volant d’empadronament).

Bring copies of everything. Offices differ slightly, and a missing copy is the most common reason for a second trip.

Step 4 (workers only): Social Security

If you came on a work visa, your employer registers you with Social Security when you start, and you will have a Social Security number (NUSS). If you are self-employed or your employer asks you to get the number yourself, see how to get your Social Security number in Spain. Students and non-lucrative residents do not need one unless they start working.

Bank account and healthcare

With the NIE on your visa you can usually open a bank account straight away; some banks treat you as non-resident until you show the TIE, which can mean different fees. Our page on bank accounts for non-residents explains the difference.

Students, non-lucrative and most digital nomad residents rely on the private health insurance they used for the visa, so keep it active without gaps: renewals check it. Workers registered with Social Security can request their public health card (TSI) at their local health centre (CAP) once they are registered on the padrón.

If your visa sticker expires before you have the card

This is common in Barcelona, where appointments are scarce. Your right to reside comes from the authorisation behind the visa, not from the sticker, so it does not disappear when the sticker expires. What matters is that you applied, or tried to apply, within the month: keep dated screenshots of the “no appointments” message as evidence. Avoid travelling outside Spain until you have the TIE, because re-entering with an expired visa and no card can be refused.

To get the padrón, the Social Security number, a bank account and the digital certificate done together, see the welcome pack with the four first steps for new arrivals.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need the empadronamiento before the TIE appointment?

Barcelona police offices normally ask for it, so in practice yes. Book both in your first week; if the TIE appointment comes first, bring proof of your padrón appointment and ask.

What if I cannot get a fingerprint appointment within a month?

Keep trying across the whole province and keep evidence of every attempt. The deadline is to apply, and the appointment is how you apply, so dated screenshots show you acted in time.

Can someone book the appointment for me?

Yes. The booking can be made by a representative, but you attend the fingerprint appointment in person. We book it for our clients and send the receipt with the date, time and address.

How long until I get the card?

Usually about a month after the fingerprint appointment, when you go back with a collection appointment to the office shown on your receipt.
