The digital certificate (certificado digital) is the electronic signature that lets you file, sign and receive official documents online in Spain: with the Tax Agency (AEAT), Social Security, the immigration electronic offices and the town hall. As a foreigner you can get the personal certificate issued by the FNMT, the Spanish Royal Mint, as long as you have a NIE and a valid identity document. Our service costs 80 € + VAT.

We check that your documents are the right ones, handle the online request with you, tell you exactly what to bring to the identity verification, and help you download and install the certificate once it is issued. Then we show you where you will actually use it, so that the next procedure is done from your computer and not in a queue.

Who this service is for

The certificate is useful for almost anyone who lives in Spain, but for some people it stops being optional very quickly:

  • Self-employed people (autónomos). Social Security sends its notifications to the self-employed electronically, and tax returns are filed online. Without a certificate you depend on someone else to read your own letters.
  • Digital nomads and remote workers who deal with the Tax Agency and the immigration offices from Barcelona and want to manage renewals and updates online.
  • Employees and residents who want to check their records and request certificates without booking an appointment each time.

If you do not have a NIE yet, that comes first. You can read how it works on our NIE in Barcelona page, and we can arrange both.

What the digital certificate lets you do

Once it is installed, the certificate identifies you on official websites in the same way your signature does on paper. In practice it allows you to:

  • File and sign tax returns and forms with the Tax Agency, and download your tax data and certificates.
  • Access your Social Security record, receive and read electronic notifications, and request documents such as your working life report.
  • Submit applications and supporting documents to the immigration electronic offices, where the procedure allows online filing.
  • Carry out procedures with the town hall, including many related to the padrón.

The main benefit is simple: every procedure you can do online is one appointment you do not need to find. In Barcelona, where appointments are scarce, that adds up.

What we do for you

The process has an online part and an in-person part, and each one has its own small traps. We guide you through it from start to finish:

  1. Document check. We confirm that your NIE and identity document match and are the ones the registration office will accept.
  2. Online request. We prepare the request with you and make sure you keep the request code safe, because you need it twice.
  3. Identity verification. We tell you where you can prove your identity in person, at an accredited registration office, or by video identification where that option is offered, and what to take with you.
  4. Download and installation. We help you download the certificate on the right device and browser, install it, and make a protected backup copy.
  5. First use. We show you how to sign in to the Tax Agency and Social Security with it, so you know it works before you need it.

What is included

  • Review of your NIE and identity document before you start.
  • Support with the online request and the request code.
  • Clear instructions for the identity verification, in English.
  • Help with downloading, installing and backing up the certificate.
  • A short walkthrough of the official websites where you will use it.

Common problems we solve

  • The wrong identity document. The details on the request must match the document you show at the verification. A passport number that differs from the one linked to your NIE, or an expired document, can stop the process.
  • Losing the request code. The code is needed at the verification and again to download the certificate. Without it, you usually have to start again.
  • Browser and installation issues. The download has to be done on the same computer and browser used for the request. Changing device halfway, clearing the browser or updating it at the wrong moment is a frequent reason for failure.
  • No backup copy. If the certificate only lives in one browser and that computer breaks, you lose it. We make sure you have a protected copy you can install elsewhere.

Pairing it with other services

The certificate works best together with the procedures that create the need for it. If you are registering as self-employed, it lets you receive Social Security notifications and file your quarterly returns without delay; see our autónomo in Barcelona service. For digital nomads, it makes later updates with the immigration offices easier to manage. And if you have just arrived, it is part of our Barcelona Welcome Pack together with the padrón, the Social Security number and the bank account. All options are on our packs and services page.

Frequently asked questions

Can a foreigner get a Spanish digital certificate? Yes. With a NIE and a valid identity document you can request the personal FNMT certificate in the same way as a Spanish citizen.

Do I need to go somewhere in person? Usually yes. Your identity has to be verified at an accredited registration office, unless a video identification option is available for your case. We tell you which applies and what to bring.

Is the digital certificate mandatory for the self-employed? Social Security notifies the self-employed electronically, so in practice you need a way to receive and read those notifications. The certificate is the most common way to do it.

Can I use the certificate on more than one computer? Yes. Once installed you can make a protected backup copy and install it on another device. We help you do this.

What happens if I lose the request code? Without the code you normally cannot complete the process and have to make a new request. Keeping it safe is one of the first things we check.

Requirements and procedures can change, so we confirm the current ones for your case.
