Vehicle transfer in Spain is the ownership-change process that matters when a foreigner buys or sells a Spanish-registered car, motorbike or other vehicle. It is not the same as importing a car, registering foreign plates or exchanging a driving licence. The practical risk is usually timing: paying before the vehicle report, tax position, ITV status and ownership documents have been reviewed can leave the buyer or seller exposed.

Barcelona Expat helps foreigners organise the transfer file before the handover becomes urgent. We review what role you have in the transaction, whether the vehicle already has Spanish plates, what documents are available, and whether the case should be treated as a buyer check, a seller check or a full transfer support request.

This page is for Spanish-registered vehicle ownership changes. If the car is coming from abroad or needs Spanish plates, start with Car Import or Vehicle Registration instead.

Who this service is for

This service is for foreigners in Spain who need practical help around buying, selling or checking a vehicle before the ownership change is completed. It is especially useful when the buyer or seller does not know which document should be checked first, when the car is needed quickly, or when the transaction overlaps with NIE, address or residency paperwork.

  • Foreign buyers checking a used vehicle before payment
  • Sellers who need the change of ownership handled correctly
  • Expats unsure whether a vehicle has transfer-blocking issues
  • People comparing transfer, import and registration routes
  • Families or professionals buying a vehicle soon after arriving in Spain

How Barcelona Expat can help

We help you identify the correct route before the transaction moves too far. That can include reviewing the buyer and seller positions, confirming whether the case is really a transfer rather than an import, checking what documents should be available, and explaining where a DGT vehicle report or other due-diligence step fits into the process.

If you are still researching the purchase, read our guide to buying a used car in Spain as a foreigner. If the vehicle does not yet have Spanish plates, use our vehicle registration service instead. If your issue is the licence you will use to drive, go to Driving Licence Exchange.

FAQ about vehicle transfer

Is vehicle transfer the same as car registration? No. A transfer changes the registered owner of a vehicle, while registration normally concerns getting Spanish plates or regularising a vehicle that entered Spain from abroad.

Should I check the vehicle before paying? Yes. The useful moment to review ownership, possible charges, ITV status and documents is before the transaction becomes difficult to unwind.

Can you help if I am not sure whether this is a transfer or an import? Yes. That distinction is one of the first things we check.

Use the form below to tell us whether you are the buyer or seller, whether the vehicle has Spanish plates and what stage the transaction is in.
